Neutral Point in Haptic Perception of Softness

چکیده
Abstract Haptic perception of objects’ softness plays an important role in the identification and interaction with objects. How is represented brain yet not clear. Here we investigated whether there a neutral point perceptual representation haptically perceived relative to which objects are as being “soft” or “hard”. We created wide range stimuli, varying from very hard (ceramic) soft foam differently silicone stimuli between. Participants were assigned one three different stimulus set conditions: full (18 stimuli), (13 softest stimuli) hardest stimuli). They categorized each “hard” estimated subjectively equal categorization “soft”. found that points middle set. Furthermore, during course experiment rather moved away than towards it. Our results indicate might be softness, however effects may play role.

SoftAR: Visually Manipulating Haptic Softness Perception in Spatial Augmented Reality
We present SoftAR, a novel spatial augmented reality (AR) technique based on a pseudo-haptics mechanism that visually manipulates the sense of softness perceived by a user pushing a soft physical object. Considering the limitations of projection-based approaches that change only the surface appearance of a physical object, we propose two projection visual effects, i.e., surface deformation effe...
متن کاملTactile Flow and Haptic Discrimination of Softness
Haptic perception involves both cutaneous perception, through mechanoreceptors lying on the skin, and kinaesthetic perception mediated by the position of the fingers. Analogously, artificial devices should replicate both these perceptual channels, as well. While kinesthetic information is satisfactorily replicated by current technology, cutaneous information is still a challenging task to be pr...

In the field of virtual reality and teleoperation, haptic interaction between human operator and a computer or telerobot plays an increasingly important role in performing delicate tasks, such as robotic telesurgery, virtual reality based training systems for surgery, virtual reality based rehabilitation systems (Dario et al, 2003) (Taylor, Stoianovici, 2003) (Popescu, et al, 2000), etc. These ...
متن کاملPseudo-haptic Feedback on Softness Induced by Grasping Motion
In most of the research on pseudo-haptic feedback, subjects’ hands are on the desk and the visual image is provided from a monitor placed in front of them. The setup easily induces sensory conflicts for pseudo-haptic feedback between visual and haptic perception. However, subjects rarely see simultaneously their hand in motion and in a visual display. We report here our preliminary study on pse...
